Popular Christmas Carols

Christmas carols are basically special songs sung during Christmas celebration. On many radio stations the songs begin a few weeks after Thanksgiving because they are so popular. Christmas carols were specifically written for specific purpose mostly for presentation of religious dramas. The word carol is derived from French word caroller which means dancing around the circle. Christmas carol lyrics range from traditional, holy, humorous and even to odd lyrics. It doesn’t feel like Christmas without songs and having hot chocolate at the fireplace.


There are numbers of Christmas carols that hold specific meaning. Ave Maria – popularized by Franz Schubert, Angel we have Heard on High- this refrain is one of the oldest and most popular among all. Joy to the World is always sung with lots of enthusiasm. O come , All ye Faithful was composed by John Francis Wade in 1742 and is gorgeous. O Holy Night is beautiful and was written by French winemaker Placid Cappeau. Josh Grobin does an amazing rendition of this piece.

There were official singers called waits after that public carol singing became popular. It was band of people led by local leader and they only use to sing on Christmas Eve. Over the year the word carol has evolved with new and changed meaning to refer to certain kinds of songs.
